Post 283's hall survived the fire with power and water intact and became the Palisades command center, hosting FEMA, the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers under one roof and serving as VOAD headquarters coordinating roughly 40 agencies including the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Team Rubicon. About 1,600 families passed through at the height of operations, and VOAD designated the post as the official Long Term Recovery Group site.
