PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — FireAid's first grant round released $50 million to over 120 nonprofit organizations, reported to have reached more than 150,000 Angelenos with emergency housing, food, trauma counseling, direct financial relief, childcare and animal welfare services.

Because the money flowed through nonprofits rather than to households, many survivors never saw a FireAid check — the source of the controversy that followed.
