PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Commissioner Lara and Assemblymember Mike Gipson unveiled the Smoke Damage Recovery Act (AB 1795), which would create the nation's first statewide framework for handling wildfire smoke damage claims.
Key provisions require insurers to inspect smoke claims within 30 days, meet defined payment timelines, and restore contaminated homes to a safe and habitable condition. It followed roughly 42,000 wildfire claims filed with no consistent smoke standard in place.
