PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — The Smoke Damage Recovery Act (AB 1795) moved through the California Legislature in March 2026, described as the nation's first smoke damage standards bill.
It would require insurers to inspect smoke claims within 30 days, hold them to defined payment timelines and require that contaminated homes be restored to safe and habitable condition. Survivors with unresolved smoke claims should track the bill's final form for retroactive application.
