New state insurance consumer-protection laws take effect

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — A package of laws sponsored by Commissioner Lara to strengthen consumer protections and wildfire resilience took effect January 1, 2026, including changes affecting the FAIR Plan and claim handling.

Policyholders still in open claims from the January 2025 fires should check which of the new protections apply retroactively to their claim.
